Marieb, Benjamin/Cummings Publishing Company (REQUIRED) 'Lab Guide' (REQUIRED) 'Anatomy Coloring Book', 2nd edition, Kapit and Elson, Harper Collins (OPTIONAL) REQUIRED MATERIALS Safety glasses, dissecting kit COURSE OBJECTIVES FOR LAB 1. Mastery of minimum vocabulary in human anatomy In this lab we will IDENTIFY and DEFINE essential anatomical structures and terms frequently used in the clinical field. In an effort to maximize the learning efficiency diverse methods will be employed.
We will look at the charts, touch 3D models, put together life-size skeleton puzzle, dissect various specimens, work with animated dissection software, examine prepared histology slides. In addition, we will use various group activities to rehearse medical terms. Revisiting physiological concepts with pre-designed experiments For highlighted physiological phenomena, simple recording instruments will be used to observe and quantify physiological processes. Then the investigated results will be reported in a scientific communication form. GRADE (25% of total grade) Quiz (10) 20% Lab Report (2) 25% Practical (2) 50% In-lab performance 5% Quiz The purpose for the weekly quiz is to help you organize the study planning on a regular basis, and to encourage you to divide up the amount of workload for practicals. We will have weekly quizzes covering materials mostly from the current lab. Preview on learning subjects is like doing a 'warm-up' before the exercise.
It primes your system (in this case, your brain). Lab Report One of the major benefits of laboratory class is that we get to 'experience' what the physiologists do as they discover new facts or principles in physiology. They test their ideas using instruments on various animal models. We will revisit principles learned in lecture by doing an experiment as if we were physiologists. As we do the experiment, various science skills are used; testing the hypothesis, observing the phenomenon, quantify the observations, analyzing the results, learning to use instruments. The final stage of any science experience has to be a communication. We will write scientific reports on the experimental results.
Practical Practicals are cumulative. The lab bench space will be divided into 20 - 25 stations, and each station will have 3 - 5 short questions. Prior to each practical, review sessions will be held in the lab. This is an open-lab type of setting where you could come in anytime at your convenience. A designated TA will host each review session. Missed Exam There is NO make-up quiz or practical.

If you were in inevitable circumstances, you must IMMEDIATELY contact your lab instructor for resolution. Any cases unresolved WITHIN A WEEK will be considered as an unexcused absence, which results in '0' credit toward the missed lab. STUDY TIPS FOR ANATOMY Although anatomy labs may seem rather dry (lots of memorization, almost like learning a new language), there are ways to overcome the hurdles.
1) Define your learning style. First of all, we need to find out what method is best for me to learn anatomical objects. Am I visually oriented or kinesthetic? Flash card works for me the best or should I find a study pair? Discover your strengths and cultivate your learning style accordingly. 2) Use a repetition strategy.
Any memorization requires repetition. What I would strongly suggest is a 'triple-attack'; Preview/Exercise/Review method. Our quiz system encourages you to go over materials beforehand. So when you walk in the lab, what you are going to learn will not be so foreign to you. Then after the lab, we give the third stimulus to our brain helping maintain the signals. There is another principle associated with this strategy; 'Pay now, Play later'.
If we do 'more' preview, then we get to do 'less' review; always antagonistic relationship between these two. As we are more prepared, the task becomes easier on us; greater productivity with less pressure.
Finally, please let me welcome you to the exciting lab events, and I wish you a success-filled semester as we begin the journey together as a team. Remember that success is not just getting the best grade in this class, but growing to your maximum potential!
