You can not convert the transmission itself to an automatic. But you can get an automatic and put it in, although there are other things that may affect it such as that your computer is programmmed for a manual. You would have to buy the brake pedal assembly, you get it from a junkyard. The brake pedal assembly has the clutch pedal attached to it in the manual and the automatic don't.

Yes, if it's worth it if you have a lot into your car or it's a rare car then its worth it. I did it to my civic and it cost me about $2500. I didnt do anything I had a shop do it because I didnt want to mess anything up. I really like it. They had to cut a hole for the clutch and do some other work but all in all I really feel a difference in power and in performance. Automatic Transmissions can be made so that it only changes gears by moving the shifter.

It is rarely practical to convert on a late model vehicle as the electronic fuel and ignition systems are different between a manual and an automatic transmission. Contrary to popular belief, you CAN shift a MANUAL tranny WITHOUT the clutch. You really only need the clutch to get you into 1st gear. There's alot involved in the conversion; pedals, cables, quadrants and linkages, exhaust clearance, radiator(some models), tranny computer and harnesses, upper and lower shifter boots, and theres always the question, will the shifter line up with the hole in the tranny hump. As far as i know, it is impossible to change thetransmission itself but it is possible in most cases to change anauto tranny car to a manual. It will take some work and it is acostly change to do, but it can be done. The real question is 'isit worth it'. On the one hand, you would be better off just buying a new car forthe type of prices charged to do that.

On the other hand if youwant to do it yourself, read on. It is kind of a pain to have to install the clutch pedal andlinkage, but basically it is a bolt on for the tranny and clutch,and you need new drive shafts because they will be too long withthe new transmission in there. Note that you may also have tochange the flywheel because the manual and automatic versions arein many cases different! Remember that if you go through with it you may need to upgrade thebell housing and change out the driveshaft as well as modify orreplace the vehicle's computer.

It is pretty easy to do as long asyou can find the same bellhousing patterns. If you are looking at aChevy it is actually very simple - the only problem is changingsafety switches for park and neutral starts and changing thesteering column out. You don't necessarily have to change it but itsaves some headaches with the electronics end of it. I'm going to do it to my 92 Ford Ranger in the spring.
