Because he knows how to read and write, Nightjohn feels a responsibility to share that skill with other slaves. With this in mind, he returns to the South and takes up a position working for Clay Waller. He voluntarily becomes a slave again in order to help others. The narrator of the book is one of the many slaves impacted by Nightjohn's return. Sarny is a twelve year old girl who is also enslaved on the plantation. She tells of Nightjohn's bravery, as well as that of the other slaves, who learn to read and write in spite of the consequences they face if caught.
